Palette Knife

A palette knife was used to apply paint using two different methods. In the first case the paint was smoothed on with the palette knife so the paint layer was relatively smooth, but with some ridges that have a slight three-dimensional quality.

The palette knife was used also used to impart an impasto appearance in which the paint is applied thickly and with considerable texture so that a three-dimensional appearance is achieved. To create impasto, the flat part of the palette knife was used to “pull-up” on the paint once it was applied to the substrate resulting in a “spiky” appearance.
